One Video At a Time
With deep fakes and identity theft, it’s getting harder and harder to detect what on the media is real and what is fake. Through this new technology, manipulation of videos takes fake news to the next level. Many harmless deep fakes have been created, like inserting Nicolas Cage into various movies he doesn’t belong to, but what would happen when you took the president’s face and doctored it, creating an entirely new speech with words that he’s never said?
Hany FaridAccording to computer science professor at Dartmouth College, Hany Farid, this software is "dangerous" whereby almost anyone could do it. To back up Farid's idea that we are "absolutely not ready for this" technology, he draws out a political scenario he doesn't believe is a stretch. Let's say a video is produced of Donald Trump announcing he's just launched nuclear weapons against North Korea. This video goes viral before North Korea finds out it's fake, quickly launching an attack in response to the content. "The fact is, it's not a hypothetical anymore, we are seeing this happening," says Farid. There are currently so many realistically scary deep fakes of political individuals saying ridiculous things online. People like Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump, and Hillary Clinton have all been edited onto comedic impersonation performances saying things that never should be mentioned. It's just a matter of time before this method of editing is taken to the extreme.
